We took our first official vacation as a family of four a few weeks ago to the incredible Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa. Dan and I joked that even after owning two homes, having two kids, being married and on our own for yearrrrrs, this seemed like the most "adult" thing we had ever done! There's just something about going on vacation where you ARE the mom and dad I guess ;)
We chose the Hyatt Regency Maui for a few reasons and it definitely did not disappoint! First, if you follow me here or over on the gram, you know that both of our girls LOVE to swim. So Hawaii seemed like a great option as we first began planning. Second, I had actually stayed at the Hyatt Regency Maui as a teenager with my family about 15 years ago. I have the BEST memories of that trip--in fact, they were only usurped by this amazing trip with my own daughters! Finally, location. Kaanpali is a gorgeous stretch of beach and everything you need is right there. We only left the resort three times because truly, we did not want to leave! But we did walk along that stretch quite a bit and it is just beautiful!
I want to share with you a few of our favorite features of the Hyatt Regency Maui and why I can promise you that we will be traveling back!
Our favorite feature of the resort was their pool. It is huge, gorgeous, and kid friendly. The pool is sectioned off into two sections: one side has a kid play area and the other has a gorgeous open pool for both kids and adults. It is separated by a waterfall and cave feature and an awesome swim up bar! On the kid's side they have a water slide for big kids and adults and smaller water slide for little kids! Emi probably went down that slide hundreds of times over our stay, and I even took Isla down once! They also have a little play area with a splash pad area, which was fun for Isla. We spent most of our trip in the main pool area. My biggest tip is to get down early and snag poolside lounge chairs in an area of the pool that has the blue step (the step goes around most of the pool). We spent hours a day in this spot with the girls--Emi swam all over the pool and Isla liked to play and jump off the little blue step. It was perfect!
One of our pool days we had a poolside cabana rental, which made our day out by the pool with two littles super easy! The rental provides shade and a spot to lounge and even nap! Isla took a huge two hour nap under the shade of the cabana and I was able to lounge and read a book. And they say a vacation with kids is just a trip--I beg to differ!
With the cabana we were able to hang by the pool most of the day, eat lunch poolside, and still feel like the kids got enough time out of the sun. This is a must if you plan on having one big pool day with little kids. It just makes it so much easier.
During our stay we had access to the Regency Club. Included with Regency Club access was daily continental breakfast, evening hors d'oeuvres, and personal concierge service. The girls especially loved their afternoon trips down the the Club to grab an after-nap chocolate chip cookie with Dan! I think upgrading to Regency Club access is a super smart option for those traveling with small kids. It was perfect for those times when we needed a snack, but sitting down in a restaurant with littles just wasn't going to work. We fully took advantage of the amenities (remember those daily cookie trips?!) and would definitely recommend it for families!
Breakfast at Swan Court
I think Dan and I would probably agree this was one of our favorite parts of staying at the Hyatt. We love staying at resorts for vacation--we just feel it makes the experience extra special--but the one downside to staying at resorts over, for example, a condo, is you eat out a lot! Well, this breakfast buffet was incredible and made eating out with our kids super easy. We had breakfast included every morning and not only was it delicious, but it often kept us full throughout the day so we chose to either do a light lunch or early dinner. It was perfect! The buffet is delicious and the restaurant itself is gorgeous with views of the hotel's many exotic birds. And here is an insider tip for you all--you can do the breakfast to go! We did this many mornings! We ran down to Swan Court together, grabbed breakfast for all four of us (did I mention, kids under 5 eat free! So worth it!) and take it back up to our room. The girls then could eat breakfast as their wiggly self in our room and Dan and I enjoyed ours out on our lanai! Amazing!!!!
Drums of the Pacific Luau
Not only is this luau amazing, but it is on property at the Hyatt! Can it get better and easier with kids than that? We had the total VIP experience and it was worth splurging for. You get to sit in the front row of table which is so wonderful with little kids who want to be up close to all the action. Emi went on stage and learned to hula! The food was spectacular and they had a kids' buffet (seriously, can't thank you enough Drums of the Pacific for thinking of that!). All in all, it was such a fun experience to share with the girls and the convenience of it being just steps away from our room was absolutely awesome.
The Hyatt Maui has an incredible wildlife program that the girls absolutely loved. They have daily wildlife tours and penguin feedings, which the girls loved! They also have a Koi pond and Emi was able to feed them on the first day!! There are birds everywhere you look and Isla, my little bird lady, was in bird heaven! It is truly remarkable to see!
If you are looking for your next family vacation, I can't recommend the Hyatt Regency Maui enough. It is the perfect hotel for families who love the resort-style vacations, but also want a family friendly atmosphere. We honestly cannot wait to travel back with the girls. We made the most amazing memories and plan on continuing to travel there as a family tradition!
